another night of hidden tears
another night of emptiness
another night of masked sadness
despite being a face in the crowd
despite enjoying the music
despite appreciating the drinks
despite somehow fitting in
a world full of pairs
a world full of knowing glances
a world full of secret smiles
a world full of lovers
another night returning to an empty place.
In this one you not only got into a rhythm which instantaneously turned it into a poem (there are more qualifiers of course), but you got yourself into a mood which cries out from the lines. It is a great basis for a poem: take a repeated formula and build on it as you change IT. Don’t you know that deep inside we are all still yearn to dance to drams around the fire? You use it to promote your melancholy and your loneliness and we’ll dance to it.
Another feature which I am a personal sucker for is the false coldness of a logical formula. The poem is built like a series of assumptions leading to a conclusion. We have the Universal assumptions: “a world full of pairs/
a world full of knowing glances…” We have the particular assumptions: “…despite appreciating the drinks/ despite somehow fitting in” (I loved the sober qualifier: ‘somewhat’ in the last line) and we have this half and ‘half breed’ assumptions (one particular night of many similar like it): “Another night of loneliness/ another night of hidden tears”.
the conclusion at the last line returns us to the “Logical” (in form only) of the first lines, which clashes with the mild build up of hope (we are ‘warned; by the word despite in each line!) in the middle of the poem. We are invited to crush emotionally with the poet, and anyone who was ever lonely could easily do that.
