Caliban’s diary

I Caliban, alone

Thou found me here and here I stay
A lone to the land a lass alack a day
Me to tree to stone to stream
What where were berries in’t
And now and now all in all
I have are only empty promises
Left to me by ancestors and cruel masters
These dreams are as nothing
In those moments when I truly wake
I should have peopl’d else this isle
With a kinder face of folk
Who care when they care
And love as they love
All the charms that I may muster
Birds bees beetles bats
Wasps stirges nettles gnats
Come to call on my calling
But I dance the dance of brave heros
And poor lonely Caliban to serve them
I must remember to get myself a better master

V. Caliban’s lair - exunt Miranda

So you have finally gone love? Nothing of you remains…
No longer are you curious after your old playmate
Having gotten what you seek, now off in seeking fresher meat
So it must must be ; Caliban to the stone; he is nothing
Your father would have none of it and when he knows
I surely will be scor’d within a fragile inch of my life
Ah and I know all too well which inches he shall take
Will you watch as he has his wraith upon me?
Lashing lines acrost my back where your fingers scratched
While the whip licks lightly upon my breaking body
As you play innocent in innocent games in watching
I wonder how you will smell then; your legs open
Will your soft sweet fingers lie under your linen dress
Where I with my clumsy brutish hands caressed
I may forward strain myself to catch your scent
So then will I feel pain not; as with my heart and mind be here
Where we once lay together your kind hand upon me
Caliban will be blamed; this much is certain, for indeed
How could such a cruel master ever allow his only daughter
To service the servant; ‘tis folly, yet I know it was so
And indeed she served me well; as prince to this isle I was born
I have not forgotten that. Though I am brought low
By my master’s power; These trees and stones remember me
Even as she came to me – both children of nature did we explore
The greater mysteries of our places, and both were master
As both were servant so in time were we both so rewarded
And now she is gone, to hide her new wisdom; I too am gone
For when my part is discovered I shall be ever more enslaved
Only the air is free to dance and play about her
Teasing with their small freedoms and libertine liberties
Do this for your old earthen friend; bring me the smells of her,
I know where she walks by the turn of her tail
So that in memory may she lie, and there I may go
Her youthful mantle floral crown she carries as treasure
Held tight in close closed or open hungry for pleasure

Exunt Caliban
