Even on the edge, she will always wait
for the word that gives her permission,
and the slight, almost imperceptible nod
which allows her leeway for fresh release;

Its utterance frees her from inhibitions,
letting confused thoughts tumble pell-mell
hurtling into a sheer abyss, where
his voice will resound as a muffled echo;

Perhaps it is just a tedious, household word
that has many pedestrian uses; but here,
in this context, it creates a new landscape
for fingers to dance over, even on the edge.
