I went down to the river,
tried to drown myself.
But the river ran dry,
Just got mud and dirt,
Man that really hurt.
Left me here to cry,
Damn river just ran dry.

I went down to the bar,
Tried to drown my sorrow,
But the bar ran dry,
Ain't got no beer or rye.
Man that really hurt.
Left me here to cry,
Damn bar just ran dry.

I'm still here, but not for lack of tryin'
I ain't even good at dyin'
Another day on my own,
Lord I just want to go home.

I went down to the Devil,
told him I wanted to go home.
But the Devil wasn't around,
Was told he left town.
Man that really hurt.
Left me on my own,
The Devil wasn't home.
