After years of taking pride
In his work and working well
Building a career, solid if not golden
He had to retire early
Sometimes things can happen
Life had caught him by surprise

Experience and training
Storage banks of knowledge
Developed over years
Accumulated wisdom
No longer to be used
Just clutter in his mind

That job was so important
Phone calls, e-mails, meetings
deadlines, problems, issues
Bosses, audits, profits
Sleep depriving worries
Turned off as with a switch

Barefoot and unshaven
He smiled at his sweet wife
On a Tuesday Morning
As they lingered over coffee
