She drops her glove and holds his eager arm,
They are the ideal couple: that’s their charm;
He understands her kindness, knows her taste,
His perfect arm wraps round her perfect waist;
She’s certain he’s the one to steal her breath,
To stop her heartbeat cold: the little death
that is so hot, it’s chill: makes them both stare,
They’re warm, replete and pleasured, still they care
for all the favours their perfection earns,
They know the twists of fate and how it turns
each bated kiss from lust to patient love,
She holds his eager arm and drops her glove.
I didn't really like it on the first read, but came back after reading the rest of today's crop. It is a delightfully effective form piece (I normally hate "form" in modern writers), and it is perfect simply for not being pretentious--it aims at exactly what it is and succeeds perfectly in describing a mature relationship. I'm lucky I came back.
This poem is mentioned in today's New Poem Review in the Poetry Feedback & Discussion forum. I really enjoyed this. Thanks for the read!
