Perfection

Piano trios - there's a new CD
by top class players. It's got rave reviews;
it sounds quite brilliant, partly through the use
of new techniques, and fears that there might be
too little feeling were dispelled - a free
and easy, certain craftsmanship imbues
the music with a warmth that doesn't lose
by having been recorded digitally.

Perfection, surely. Still, this won't come near
those times my father and some friends of his
would thump and saw their way though the same score,
not meant for anybody's ears. I'd hear
them from my bed, go down, and not to miss
a note I'd stand enthralled behind the door.
