I very often look back on what has become for me
Another time, another place. Another me.
I remember the joy of loving, being in love.
But I remember the sorrow, the pain, when love fled.
I can reflect fondly of times just holding, being held.
That silent whisper of your breath, the beat of your heart.
Listening to the rain drops outside the window
Falling like tears, a reminder of what wasn't to be.
I look back now remembering, but the smile won't come
Those images of holding you so tight, when you fought to run away.
Too painful still to reflect upon with fondness, with longing.
Love is a funny thing, it remains, exists, perhaps always will.
But it has taught me, sometimes we will never have,
Never know the love we hoped for, wanted.
So we reflect on it, it's as close as we'll ever get.
And we go forward, satisfied on the mirrored image of what could have been.
