--- a terzanelle for Lauren.Hynde's challenge ---

When I was five and sleepy-time came,
Tucked beneath covers and waiting for sand,
Light from their door was to blame.

Shadows on the floor fought and fanned
The hot fires of regret, sorrow and shame,
Tucked beneath covers and waiting for sand.

As epithets flared with curses' good aim,
Shouts grew loud from whispers denied
The hot fires of regret, sorrow and shame.

Echoed anger reached my quiet bedside,
I closed my ears as I heard my name.
Shouts grew loud from whispers denied.

Shut out the hurt and forget the game,
Welcoming dreamland where joy can reign.
I closed my ears as I heard my name.

I fell into darkness to escape the pain
When I was five and sleepy-time came,
Welcoming dreamland where joy can reign.
Light from their door was to blame.
