certainly these groups, without a recent history of higher level academics in their own countries, are also among the most gifted when given the opportunity to study and achieve. For example many Africans have had notable success in Medicine, Computer logic, Business and Economics, Science etc. in the USA since they began coming here in the 1960's on Education visas.

As a teacher I found brilliant students among the poorest minorities. I doubt there is a significant genetic advantage to account for the Jewish "smartness". More likely a culture that prizes education and a history of loving the process of being educated. The Talmud is a form of a historical bible but contains varied and diverse explanations of the events and parables described, really a "law school" discussion with excessive footnotes to the text. Is it any wonder that with this training in logic and critique so many Jews are lawyers? Having this core appreciation of education is an advantage most 3rd world populations do not have. In addition, once the diasporas (referring to the Northern Kingdom exiled between 740-722 BC from Israel by the Assyrians, as well as Jews, Benjaminites, and Levites exiled from the Southern Kingdom in 587 BCE by the Babylonians, and from Roman Judea in 70 CE by the Roman Empire) took place the Jews were forced to come in contact with diverse populations. In particular, the Roman diaspora moved Jewish men (women were often excluded) into various parts of Russia and Europe (where they mixed with the indigenous populations: the modern jew is far more diverse genetically then is assumed) where they were able to come in contact with highly educated populations and benefit from these associations. The Nazi holocaust and the diaspora of those who survived once more pushed them into the learning centers of North America (Canada, America and South America) where the ability to advance economically was again tied to education; ergo, why there are so many Jews are in fields of science, medicine, law, art and music. We see the same movements (in the USA) toward higher education today among the Asian communities where parents tudor their children, use private schools and push the children to high levels of achievement.(the highest percent of acceptance at UCLA in Los Angeles are Asian students, not Jews) . Likewise our Latino population are just beginning to enter the same process as illustrated by the fact for the first time two highly educated (both 1st generation) Cuban-Americans are tilting for the presidency. Therefore there a plenty of "smarts" out there just waiting for a chance.
