Lonely nights become endless days,
filled with questions without end,'
unanswered by a lover,
as well as my best friend.

Outpourings of love turned to ashes
from the heart that I once knew,
and now I carry her memory around --
the pebble in my shoe.

Rescinding the love that I once pledged,
or throwing away that stone,
is something that I won't ever do
as I wander this path alone.

Indeed, this doggerel holds the name
of the beloved I wish was here
for me to love and to cherish --
forever, she'll remain as dear.
