I liked the story, and how it worked out. I thought that Kelly was the adult in the room. What she did was very risky for her relationship with Henry, who for eight years had made an existence of self-pity, bitterness, and hate. Luckily for him Kelly forced him to confront himself, through his daughter, which she correctly perceived he still loved. Although his turnaround was very fast, it nevertheless made sense. His continued negative feelings towards his ex-wife and Tom also made sense. When Juliana and Ben moved closer to where Henry and Kelly lived, it seemed a bit of a contrivance, but it could happen and it allowed her relationship with her father to strengthen further. Kelly made Henry’s new life possible. If she had not done what she had done Henry would have died a lonely, bitter, and self-pitying husk of a man. A good story.

A new partner who acts the way Kelly did is not worth dealing with.

But the author, for whatever reason, wanted him to become a wimp and betray his line and himself.

Strange that some people think they have to force their way of seeing things on other people. If he no longer wants to have anything to do with his “old” family, then that is his decision.

But this is how our world has become. Where people ask for help, the global community looks the other way and where no one asks for help, everyone tries to impose their help!

This hit too close to home so obviously I hated it. It was well written and kept me reading it to the end. It’s been over 20 years and I’ve only recently begun repairing my relationship with my daughter. I was not allowed to walk her down the aisle for her first wedding due completely to her mother and her mother’s family turning my sons and daughter against me, even though the ex was the one who cheated. The healing in my relationship with my daughter began when my daughter asked me to officiate at her second wedding. My oldest son and I have a cordial relationship but his brothers are still pretty much absent from my life. I never met my “Kelly”, choosing instead to date occasionally. My dog has been my faithful companion for the past 11 years and that’s just how I like it!

I still harbor ill-will toward my ex and her family. I’ve remained single since the divorce was finalized in 1999. She’s on husband number four and not happy. Oh well. She made her bed, as they say.

It’s pretty fucked up that we ask the kids to basically chose between their parents. Especially when 90% of cases are already settled before that point

To the guy who “i remember 14”. Unless you are 15, no you don’t. It was an impossible choice for a CHILD to be forced to make. The mother deserves much more pain but the child chose the only option she had, given what her mother told her.
