Bodingtonabout 3 years agoI believe this story is very well written because it illustrates how one can justify one’s actions by rationale explanation while at the same time ignoring contrary facts. As a result the conclusion of this story is very dispiriting. Case in point is the supposition by the narrator that because her daughter-in-law has an eerie resemblance to her, that her son’s motive for marriage is to satisfy a latent carnal lust he harbors, that cannot be fulfilled because of the proscription against incest. Incidentally, I have no issue of plausibility in the premise that the daughter-in-law and the narrator have a remarkable physical similarity. In my own personal life, one of my daughters-in-law has an uncanny resemblance to a secondary movie actress as well as to a Top 30 tennis player on the WTA tour.
There is a more logical explanation, though of the son’s marriage. Most men who aren’t otherwise mistreated by their mothers, would hold their mother up to the highest pedestal. Again in my own example, my wife would scoff every time I would defend my mother even against some truly valid charge against St Tamara, as my wife would refer to my mother. The point is that any man might be attracted to a woman who resembles their mother, but it does not necessarily mean that the man had always wanted to have carnal knowledge of his mother. It just means that a man would like his wife to be like his mother at least for the good points of her character.
As to recalling the incidents when the son has seen the narrator nude several times, her connections of the dots are faulty. She admits in her reasoning that there was no electric charge of lust emanating during the occasions. They could be explained away as accidental incidents at the time. But now in her current desire for her son comes to the conclusion that most of those incidents were deliberatively orchestrated by the son as proof positive that he had a lust for her just the same as she now had for him.
That conclusion by the narrator is very false indeed. Being of the male persuasion I can attest that the naked form of a woman is always alluring almost at any age to a heterosexual male. I recall even at the age of eight, nine or ten, my mother took me to an art museum where I stared at several nude paintings by Paul Rubens. I do remember being enchanted by these women even though at such age I had no real knowledge of the birds and the bees. If you know of Ruben paintings you will note there are no skinny nudes, and I believe I can trace my life long affinity for voluptuous women to that moment.
Anyway I apologize for digressing. My point is that almost every heterosexual teenage male would be thrilled to witness his mother naked, but that does not translate into a carnal desire for his mother. Even if as implied by the narrator that the son was deliberatively setting up situations to spot his mother nude, does not necessarily mean he was thinking or even wishing to have sex with her. If he truly had that motive he would have at least give a signal of his desire and retreat if rebuffed.
It is very telling that the narrator/mother was the instigator, and seducer, who brought on the first sexual experience between them. Then as the proverbial shit hit the fan, the son tried to redeem the situation. BTW this is the only point of the story where I find plausibility lacking. The fact the wife had an extramarital affair one can understand, but it’s inconceivable that the son had no sex with his wife during her ovulation period which brought on conception. It would be more realistic for the wife to have declared that the son might not be the father but I understand that such complicates the conclusion unduly.
That brings to my overall impression of this story. The narrator/mother despite her lusts for here son carnally, has not been a good mother for him generally. If she truly loved him, she would want the best outcome for him. To live with his mother as lovers eschewing other females is not a desire that almost every rational heterosexual male would wish as his destiny. That last sentiment does not make this story inconsequential only regrettable.
