This is a repost of the first part of a story I previously had taken down.

All characters are over 18.

This is fiction.

This is 100% an original work by me. I assert my full rights in all areas where this story is viewed.

*****

Brian waited in line at the movie theater but when it was his turn the ticket taker stopped him.

"Sorry, kid. You have to be accompanied by an adult to see this movie."

"I am an adult."

"Sorry, move aside."

"I'm 18." Brian protested.

"Show me your ID."

Brian pulled out his state issued ID and handed it over. The man looked at it and shook his head. "You don't look 18 and this looks like a fake ID."

"It's not."

"Go back to the box office and they'll give you a refund."

"I don't want a refund. I want to see the movie."

"I can't help you kid."

"This is discrimination. I can call the cops on you for this."

"And when they get here I'll tell them that we can refuse service to anyone for any reason. Now get the fuck out of here before I call the cops on you for trespassing."

Just then a group of people behind Brian all started laughing. "Yeah, get the fuck out of here, NERD."

Brian turned and saw their faces. He knew who they were. He used to go to school with them. Brian grit his teeth and walked out. This was bullshit. He'd never go to that theater ever again. Or maybe he would. Maybe after his grand plan for life finally took off he'd come back to this place and buy it. In the meantime maybe he'd hack into their computer system and mess with all their records.

As he walked through downtown he reached up and felt his hair. It was so short now. The boarding school he went to had let him grow out his hair as long as he wanted but for graduation they'd made him cut it. Brian tried to protest but they insisted that it was a requirement. They reasoned that he needed to look good for his family when he walked across the stage.

Then when graduation finally came no one in his family had shown up. Even the kid in foster care who didn't even have a family had people there supporting him but Brian's family all wanted him to just go away. Why hadn't his mother just given him away when he was born? He gave her credit for standing up to his grandparents, who had wanted her to get an abortion. He'd rather be alive than not so but that event did not make up for how she'd treated him all these years.

He understood why they felt that way but he didn't have to like it.

He arrived at the small house that was his mother's home. He'd have to live there for the next two and a half months. He didn't want to. If his scholarship had covered summer school then he'd be out the door and moved into a college dorm faster than you could blink. But it didn't. At least next summer he likely wouldn't have to come back here. He already had a part time job lined up in for when his first semester as a college freshman started. He'd work and save up and then next summer he'd be able to afford to stay somewhere else.

The house was small and didn't hold a lot of good memories for Brian. He'd had friends who's living rooms were larger than this whole house. There was no room for anything. Everything was pressed against everything else at it made cleaning such a chore that his mother rarely did it. Brian didn't have his own room. Only his mother did and the door to her room had been damaged a while back and was taken off it's hinges. Brian used to sleep on a thin mattress they used to slide behind the sofa in the daytime. That mattress was gone now so he figured he's be sleeping on the sofa, if he could find a place to put all those clothes that were folded and stacked up on it.

Then another thought came to him. His mother wouldn't be home. Maybe he could just sleep in her bed. This was ridiculous. Why did they have to live this way? When he got to college he was going to find out which major lead to the highest paying career and pick that. He was tired of being poor. He was going to get a good job. They'd always told him that a good education was your ticket out of poverty. Unlike the ticket to the movie he'd wanted to see, he fully intended to cash this one and wasn't going to let anything stop him.

Brian went into the house and heard that someone was in the shower. He sighed. He had thought he'd have the house all to himself. His mother was supposed to be in the city staying at her boyfriend's apartment. But no. His mom finished her shower and casually walked naked through the house. She stopped in the living room to finish drying her hair.

Brian was not shocked by this. He'd seen his mother naked hundreds of times. When you live in a house as small as this there was no privacy. The living room was really just an extension of her bedroom. It probably would have made life easier to just knock the wall down.

"I'm home mom." Brian said and his mother stopped and pulled the towel down from her head.

"Brian. What are you doing here?"

"I'm home. I graduated."

"But school doesn't get out for another week."

"The seniors graduate a week early."

"Really?" his mother said in annoyance with the towel in her hand by her side without even bothering to try to cover up. "Well, couldn't you have stayed there until everyone got out?"

"No. It doesn't work that way."

"Well, I don't know what you're going to do here. Are you going to get an apartment?"

"Why would I do that?"

"You can't live here. You're 18 now."

"I don't have any money to do anything else."

His mother was not happy about this. She got on the phone and started calling around. Brian knew what was going on. She was going to push Brian onto someone else.

"I can't have him here. He'll ruin everything. He won't get in your way though. He'll probably just sit and read books all day. He won't mind sleeping on the couch."

He wanted to tell his mother that he could hear her but she didn't care.

So it was decided. Brian would leave and go stay with his mother's sister. Instead of getting a good night's sleep after riding the bus system for two days to get home, Brian had to take his one suitcase and one briefcase that held everything he owned in the entire world and take a 27 hour train ride overnight half way across the country to another climate to go stay with his aunt because his mother just couldn't be bothered with having her son in the house.

Brian arrived at his aunt's apartment in the big city but couldn't get into the building. He had to sit and wait in the park down the street until she got off work. He didn't know her phone number and had no money for a pay phone even if he did.

He really didn't remember what his aunt looked like. He looked at the people passing and tried to see if he could get a sight of her but everyone was a stranger.

When the sun started to go down he asked the guy at the lobby to call up to his aunt's apartment again and see if she was there. His aunt answered and they finally let him go up.

As he rode the elevator up he was very impressed with how clean and well built everything was. He arrived on his aunt's floor and as soon as the elevator opened he saw a tall attractive woman standing there waiting for him.

"Hey, Brian." his aunt welcomed him. "Long trip?"

"Too long." They walked down the hall way for a bit and she opened the door to her apartment which wasn't that big but still much bigger than his mom's place. Another notable difference was just how clean it was. There was nothing out of place.

"Put your bags down and relax."

"Thanks."

"Did you eat dinner?"

"I haven't eaten for three days."

"Really! I bet you're starving."

"Something like that."

"Grab whatever you want in the kitchen."

"Thanks. I wanted to ask. Do you have internet?"

"Yep. But my computer's broken."

"Oh. I can probably fix it for you if you want."

She looked at him skeptically. "No, that's ok. Don't touch it."

Brian got some dinner and eventually got a proper shower. His aunt spent the night watching TV. When it got late she went to bed and Brian slept on the sofa.

The next morning Brian's 26 year old aunt woke him up and gave him the pass code for the elevator so he'd be able to exit and enter the building as he pleased. Brian had no idea where to go in the city so he didn't plan on doing anything.

He was writing in his notebook when his aunt came home from work. She threw herself down on the sofa and rested for a few minutes and then got up and got some orange juice.

"What're you doing?" she asked as she looked at the equations he was working on.

"Nothing."

"That doesn't look like nothing."

"Just physics."

"Homework?"

"No. It's just a project I've been thinking about."

"Ok. What is it? Explain it to me."

"Well. Right now we don't know how bicycles work."

"What do you mean?"

"According to the laws of physics, riding a bicycle should be impossible."

"No it's not."

"I know. But according to the current laws of physics it is."

"I don't understand. People ride bicycles all the time. You just get on and pedal and it goes."

"Exactly but the problem is that we don't know why it works. Our equations say it shouldn't work but in real life it does. So I'm trying to find out why."

"Why bicycles work?"

"Yeah. Whenever we have something like this that our current science can't explain it means that we have an incomplete understanding of the universe. It means we can learn something that we can likely apply to a lot of other areas."

"Wow. You know you sound just like this girl at my work. She's always talking about this kind of stuff. I bet you'd be perfect for her if you were a little older."

"You do know I'm 18."

"What?" She thought for a moment. "Yeah. I guess you are supposed to be 18 this year. Well. Ok. You want me to set you guys up?"

"On a date?"

"Sure. You might hit it off."

"I don't really have money for a date. Or clothes for that matter."

"Oh. I can get you something. It might be fun. What do you say?"

"Maybe."

"Just don't tell her you're in high school."

"I'm not in high school. I graduated."

"What? Nobody ever tells me anything. When?"

"Last week."

"Wow. Congratulations."

"Thanks."

"So ... What are you going to do? Are you looking for a job?"

"I'm going to college."

"Get out! Really?"

"Really."

"That's great. That's better than great."

"Thanks."

"That settles it. I'm taking you out to dinner."

"You don't have to do that."

"Sure. And while we're out we can shop for you some new clothes. This'll be so much fun."

"No, really. You don't have to fuss over me."

"I want to. Think of it as congratulations for both graduating high school and getting into college."

"Ok, but even if you're paying can I pick out my own clothes?"

"Sure. Totally."

The high class downtown department store his aunt brought him to was not the kind of place that Brian had ever been in before. He was used to getting his clothes from the dollar store or good will. Brian went into the changing room and put on the things he picked out to see about size. This shop had a tailor that would adjust any article of clothing if it wasn't just right but luckily for Brian they all seemed to fit pretty well.

"Come out. Let me see." his aunt said.

Brian stepped out and showed off the clothes for her. She clapped and told him he looked very handsome. He went back in the changing room to get his regular clothes back on but as he was doing so his aunt came in and handed him something.

"Here, try this one."

She had entered right at that moment when Brian had no pants on and she caught just a fleeting glimpse of Brian's cock before he tried to hide it behind his tattered boxers.

"Maybe we should get you some new underwear too while we're here."

"Um ... Yeah." He just agreed. She handed him a polo shirt for him to try on.

When they went to the cashier to check out his aunt had spent over $1500 dollars on him. He tried to protest that it was too much money but she wouldn't hear it.

"When you show up at college you need good clothes. And maybe we can take you to get contacts and you can ditch those glasses."

"There's nothing wrong with my glasses."

"Sure. I know that. But when you take a girl out it might help. Let me look at you. Wow. You look five years older. Now we just need to get you a proper hair cut and you'd be all set."

"I just got a hair cut."

In the taxi, on the way back to the apartment she called her friend from work and was trying to set up the date for the next night.

"You're not doing anything are you? ... Uh huh. ... How soon can you get ready? I have a guy I want you to meet. ... Trust me, you'll love him. ... hmm ... But you remember what you said about Chen. This guy's completely got that beat. Oh, and he knows about all that science stuff. ... If you want to ... and he'll even take you dancing. ... Oh, yes, great dancer. ... So, are you coming? ... Come on. It's Friday night. ... Don't worry. I'll be there to introduce you guys and then I'll split. ... Ok. Don't be too late."

Brian's aunt turned to him. "I got you a date."

They stopped by the apartment briefly to get all the purchases upstairs and then it was back in the taxi and off to the restaurant.

"This place is nice." Brian commented.

"This? Wait until I take you to a really nice place."

They were seated at a table and order an appetizer while they waited for Brian's date to show up.

"So, what's this girl's name?"

"April. You'll love her."

"What does she look like?"

"You'll see when she gets here."

"She's not like ..."

"Fat? No. I would not hook you up with someone I wouldn't want to see you with. Don't worry. Be cool and play your cards right and you might be waking up Saturday morning at her place."

"Wow. No pressure there."

"Just relax and be confident and ... hold on." She answered her phone. "April. Where are you? I've got him here. ... Oh no. ... Really? ... Well, ok but I can't guarantee how long a catch like this is going to be on the market if you know what I mean. ... ok. See you on Monday."

"She's not coming?"

"No. She got tied up with some friends."

They took that as an opportunity to order their meals and then Brian's aunt turned the conversation to Brian's school.

"So, what was it like going to school with no girls."

"There were girls there."

"It was co-ed."

"Yeah. They had their own dorm but we went to class together."

"Did you have any girlfriends?"

"No. I tried a couple of times but it was complicated."

"Well, I know I'm so proud of you. Wasn't it really hard to get into that school?"

"Yep. That's why it's ranked second in the nation."

"I can't imagine. And now you're going to college. What did you get on your SATs?"

"1570 combined score."

"Now that's pretty good."

"Pretty damn good. Yeah."

"Well, you are going to do so well in school. And this time when you graduate you need to give me a call so I can make sure to be there."

"I'll remember to do that."

"While you're here, we should probably get you a phone. What do you want? An iphone or one of those android things."

"Android probably sounds better because then I can run my own code on it."

"Your own ... um. ... ok. Tomorrow, we'll go and you can pick one out. And then, maybe ..."

Brian's aunt turned her attention to someone else in the restaurant and then she looked away.

"What's wrong?"

"I know that guy."

"Who?"

"Don't look. Just be cool."

"Who is he?"

"Someone I don't want to see. He's a stuck up, self important asshole."

"Oh, one of those. I hear if you use ammonia and hydrogen peroxide those come right out."

"Been cutting yourself shaving I see."

"I didn't think you'd get that."

"I can be just as ... don't look at him. Let him pass."

But the man did not pass them. He stood right by Brian's aunt and addressed her directly.

"Sandy. How wonderful to see you here."

"Shawn."

"This is Kimberly, my date for the evening."

"Charmed."

Brian could see that his aunt really just wanted these people to just go away but instead he decided to impose on them. He grabbed a chair from another table and welcomed himself to sit down.

"I see you've taken to dating elementary school students." the man charged.

Brian could see that his aunt did not want to do verbal battle with him. She just wanted him to leave but Brian was a very good debater. He wondered how well he could do against someone who thought so little of him without getting to know him first.

"We must all look so very young to a geriatric such as yourself."

The man turned his gaze towards Brian and then smiled smugly. "And you are?"

"Too important to just give my name to any old vagabond that happens to stroll in here."

That comment didn't seem to phase the man. He produced a business card from a container filled with many more and handed it to Brian.

"Diamond distribution?"

"Yes. Very prestigious work. And what do you do, Mr. oh so very important?"

"How does it feel to know you're helping to fund terrorists, human trafficking, and the mafia?"

The question caught the man off guard but he had an answer prepared. "Just rumors."

"Right, the latest UN report on the diamond industry that says over 96% of all mined diamonds fund illegal activity is just a rumor."

The man scrunched up his nose and then snorted very forcefully. "It's easy to criticize something you don't know anything about."

"But from the sounds of things I know more about your job than you do. Say, are they still using slave labor in the mines?"

"It isn't slave labor. That is an unjust smear. Labor laws are different everywhere."

"Sorry. I have to stop you. The workers are not allowed to work for anyone else. They can't move away and if they don't work in the mines then they go to prison. How is that not slavery?"

"It isn't like that anymore. You're talking about ... about practices ..."

"Not to mention the mines that are hundreds of kilometers in diameter, completely destroying the local environment. You can see those things from space."

The man clapped slowly. "Bravo. Brave effort. But our customers know value when they see it and they're willing to pay for it. We server our customers."

"Value? The price of diamonds is about to fall below that of glass. You're just trying to milk the last wave of suckers before you really do turn into a dinosaur. You give me any diamond you want to sell and I can turn it into graphite in about thirty seconds. You lost Japan. You lost Russia. In fact, your blood diamonds are only legal in South Africa, England and here and that's about to change very quickly isn't it."

"If you're referring to the current attempt to legislate..."

"Ha. No. Before Japan banned the import of mined diamonds Fujitsu had a 91% market share in the diamond market."

"Feelings are different in the US. Our customers want natural diamonds."

"Which is why in Russia when they cut a natural diamond they laser 'lab grown' into it and try to pass it off as not natural. Because customers want natural diamonds."

"Like I said. Feelings are different in different countries. Our customers know that a natural diamond represents forever. They represent ..."

"Nothing! They don't represent anything other than a guy being lucky enough to find a pretty rock on the side of the road and then forcing the local African population into slavery to mine them. Now lab grown; that actually does represent something, and something amazing at that but I bet you're too stupid to figure it out."

The man turned red in the face and stood up from his chair in an angry posture. Brian just continued his speech.

"Unlike the trinkets you sell, lab grown diamonds represent progress, human ingenuity, and abundance. They show us that if we can understand it then we can reach out and take the natural world and become its master. Lab grown diamonds show us hope for the future. They remind us again that our destiny is in our hands and if we want it we can build anything. We don't need to be lucky by being in the right place at the right time to just happen to notice a rock that looks a bit less like the others. Lab grown diamonds challenge us to take control of our lives. The right place is here. The right time is now. And no matter where I go that will always be true."
