“But I don’t want to go among mad people," Alice remarked.

"Oh, you can’t help that," said the Cat. "We’re all mad here. I’m mad. You’re mad."

"How do you know I’m mad?" said Alice.

"You must be," said the Cat, "or you wouldn’t have come here.”

― "Alice in Wonderland" by Lewis Carroll

* Butchering POV. Unless you're a seasoned writer who has mastered third-person omniscient (which most on Lit aren't and haven't), the narrator cannot know what other characters are thinking/feeling...including why. Head-hopping is the number one reason I will stop reading even an otherwise wonderful piece.

* Writing fictional narrative in present tense, especially in third person. It just sounds…weird.

* Using punctuation incorrectly…or none at all when it's needed. What is the aversion to commas?!

* Not proofreading and not using Spellcheck...or an editor.

Since joining the Volunteer Editor program in Summer 2017, I've met dozens of authors with a vast range of unique ideas. While they all have different writing styles to tell their stories, I hope that my suggestions have helped them become better writers. That my words of encouragement have instilled a personal sense of pride in their work when it has been posted on Lit for the world to see.

After careful—and somewhat difficult—consideration, I have chosen to step away from being an VE. It has been a mostly enjoyable task, though very demanding. Will I take it up again in the future? Quite possibly. But for now, I want to focus my free time on my personal life…and hopefully work more on the handful of stories I've started but set aside this past year.

I'd like to offer a parting "thank you" to all the authors who have sought me out as an editor and have esteemed my help, even if you haven't always agreed with it. Ultimately, it was your story to tell. It has been a pleasure, and I feel honored that you've given me the privilege to provide insight into your creations.

Good luck, and keep on writing!
