Not only is this stuff worth knowing, it's actually stuff I've always wanted to know, at least for the last four months since I started posting.
Your information is greatly appreciated. Many writers already knew this, but many of us didn't. Thanks.
Lit already has a very well written resource for bold and italic font (et. al) from 2002. It can be found in the "Writer's Resources" link on Lit's story homepage. Currently the submission is ranked with an "H". :)

Good to know. I got a good chuckle out of the idea of "losing a little bit of your soul."
Can't you accomplish the same thing by typing it in Word then saving it as a .txt file? I think all the formatting instructions stay as hypertext mark-ups.

I just tried it, couldn't get it to work, anyone else try?
You'd think after 110 stories I would know this but hey...I didn't. Much Appreciated...Slickman

This is true. I've read it, but was able to deal with this short set of instructions from s53smith more easily. Ghost writer.
I agree with you on that part. It's hell waiting for a story to be posted, but boy when it does get posted my soul sings out loud. I'll have to copy and paste those instructions so I can put them to use when I need them.
It seems obvious, if you know how. But I do remember wallowing in the mire of "how do they do that?". This should be linked to from the FAQ page.
...That's me and computers! But I thought / was a forward slash, and \ is a backslash. It seems, 'cos you typed it, that you mean /, but is it possible you meant to type \ meaning backslash, which is the word you use? Or am I arse over tit on this?
Jesus, this machine is wonderful when it does what you want, but a bugger when it doesn't!
and consider yourself lucky if you can even find the shift key, let alone, use it. A helpful story.
Helpful, though I admit I'm surprised that they use bare HTML coding for this stuff.
That said, I think I'll still be using .doc submissions, as that's the file I'll be sending to my editor.
Italics and emboldened text is not even necessary if you have written well.
I have read this, and I am still confused. I think showing examples of actual text coded as italics, bold and underlined would be simpler.
