"Uh," I hesitated, perched on the edge of making another joke; something in his voice held me back. For once I bit my tongue.
We stood like that for a while, behind Shaun's bar, arms wrapped around each other, silent in the dark. I felt as if I was standing on the edge of something big. I itched to say something, anything that would break the silence but held myself back. I could feel Shaun relax against my body, the long and exciting day having taken its toll on him. Smiling into the darkness I took his hand and silently led him from the bar.
If I'd learnt anything about Shaun over the past few years, it was that he came to his own choices at his own time. Rushing him would do no good.
