At the beginning the two were tied up in knots about not going too far. They each get a little strange stuff from a couple of young women, and voila! They fuck like rabbits, which is what the story is about, and apparently forget all the concerns they would have entertained since they started dating about birth control. The weird sisters (I borrow that characterization from Macbeth) didn't mention the subject - maybe they were leading the kids to damnation just as surely as Macbeth's did for him.
Authors shouldn't duck the difficult issues, of which pregnancy is foremost.
