Nicely done, wakingDown. Sets the tone from the get go with a strong visual in the first line. Gives the reader a wide swath but in a direction you'd want him/her to go.

This resonates with me more than you may know. That I think it does with many others as well makes it a powerful poem and gets beyond self-pity. If it didn't accomplish that, it would have been nothing more than another "poor me poem." It wasn't.
