That end makes a perfect break, Meli's divorce is going to work out and Kate will marry Eric. The children get on together and the six central characters are forming a cohesive though non-traditional unit.
With the current divorce rate who would be rash enough to declare that the conventional family structure was the only one acceptable? Probably only the supporters of the religious money making organisations.
