Good story, a few spelling mistakes to fix. Quiet not quite, peeled not pealed, bordered not boarded were three I can recall but there were about seven. Don't rely on spell checker because if your mistake actually is another correctly spelled word as in the first example then spell checker won't pick it up.
...about the spelling. A good story is spoilt by silly spelling mistakes, plus wrong and missing words. Never annoy "The Reader" - after all, that is who you're writing for.
There is no such thing as "mid-rif." There is, however, "midriff." Please learn the difference between "then" and "than." The problem with so many errors is that it takes a reader's attention away from the story and puts it on the author. Like biting down on a cherry pit when eating pie. What you should ignore is the ignorant commentators who can't spell and don't expect you to either. It is amazing that people who spend their time and effort writing stories have so little regard for language.
